PRELUDE
In February 1833, William and Marion (McGilchrist) Robertson,
together with their six young children, departed from
the Port of Leith, Scotland, aboard the
SS Thomas of London bound for Australia
After six months and nineteen days at sea, the Thomas
reached Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land, so called
untin 1856 when it was renamed Tasmania in honour of it's
original european discover, Abel Tasman.
In late 1837 William left Hobart Town for the new settlement
of Melbourne, the administrative capital of the then Port Phillip District
of the Colony of New South Wales, where he remained until 1839
before settling on a property near what is now Gisborne
where in 1840, he established a homestead which he named Wooling,
making it one of the very earliest settlements in the district
and the Robertsons, one of the earliest
pioneer families in the Colony of Victoria.
